A number of years ago I found myself stopped at a traffic light during a sprinkling of rain. My daughter, who was two at the time, was sleeping in her car seat. As I looked ahead, my eyes caught sight of a single raindrop which landed on my windshield. It seemed to wobble slightly, as if unsure of itself, and after a few seconds, the little raindrop slid down the windscreen, leaving a silvery trail behind. I smiled as I wondered where the raindrop had been before it landed on my car. ‘And where are you going to go next?’, I thought.
That was the moment that I thought of writing a little story about a raindrop’s adventure through the water cycle. Except that the best adventures are the ones we can share with a friend. Which is why there are two raindrops in the story – Splish and Splash.
Fast forward a number of years and I was finally able to put pen to paper, working on my dream of writing children’s books. I am thrilled to be able to release ‘Two Little Raindrops’, and I hope that it inspires children to look at rain differently. Rain provides the water needed by people, animals and plants. It fills our streams, lakes and oceans. It is constantly recycled through the earth’s system through this wondrous process called the water cycle.
The sound of soft falling rain also has a very soothing effect, which has to do with the low-frequency tones and steady rhythm of rain sounds. This helps the brain produce alpha waves which promotes relaxation and results in feelings of calm. It certainly makes me sleep much better, and that’s another reason to be grateful for the beautiful rain!
